Think Like a Scientist, Act Like a Manager

April 14, 2025

We have a saying on our team, we’re running experiments.  Our goal is to operate like a learning lab, which means we’re constantly seeking to understand what works and what doesn’t. To do this effectively, managers should adopt a scientist’s mindset.

Decide what to test

Start by identifying the key challenge your team faces.  What problem needs solving? For example, maybe your sales team wants a better strategy for reaching customers, or product development needs clarity on priorities.  Clarify the questions you need answered to guide your test.

State your hypothesis

Every good experiment starts with a hypothesis—a clear assumption about what you expect to happen.  Clearly define the impact you anticipate: who will it affect, how, when, and why?  A precise hypothesis (or working theory) will help you collect meaningful data.

Run a rigorous test

Implement your experiment with discipline, focusing on one variable at a time. This ensures clear results about what works. Include regular feedback loops, and give the experiment sufficient time to produce reliable data.

Collect your data and analyze the results

Once your experiment concludes, analyze the data.  Look for patterns and ask yourself: Does the data support or challenge your hypothesis? What insights have emerged?

Draw conclusions and communicate results

Finally, decide what your team should do next based on the findings. Should your experiment become a standard practice, or has it led to new questions worth exploring? Clearly communicate the insights and next steps to your team.

Operating like a learning lab builds a culture of shared ownership, activating the entire team in the learning and decision-making process.
